Detailed Solution

The Doctrine of Lapse, the policy of war and annexation, and misgovernment policy were the primary political reasons behind the momentous uprising of 1857. According to the Doctrine of lapse, any princely state or region under the control of the British East India Company would be automatically annexed if the king passed away without a biological male heir. Most rajas, nawabs, and zamindars were forced out of their states due to the British empire-building policies. The state was subdued by trade and commerce policies, indirect subordination (Subsidiary Alliance), war, and annexation.
