Ramnaresh Sarwan and Shivnarine Chanderpaul are two cricketers from the Caribbean who trace their roots to the indentured migrants from India. Hundreds of thousands of Indian and Chinese labourers were employed on plantations, mines, and road and railway construction projects all over the world during the nineteenth century. The Caribbean islands, particularly Trinidad, Guyana, Surinam, Mauritius, and Fiji, were the principal destinations for Indian indentured workers. Tamil migrants settled in Ceylon and Malaya, closer to home. In Assam, indentured workers were also hired for tea plantations. After their contracts expired, the majority of indentured workers stayed on or returned to their new homes in India. As a result, these countries have considerable populations of people of Indian heritage.
