O2 contains a covalent double bond between its atoms.
In an oxygen molecule, each oxygen atom shares its two electrons complete its octet. They form a double covalent bond between them. The electronic configuration of oxygen is1s2 2s2 2p4. The diatomic molecule of oxygen is formed by one pz-pz overlap leading to one sigma bond and side-on overlap of  py-py leads to pi bonds.
