Detailed Solution

The fundamental reason that World War I began was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Austria on June 28, 1914. The start of World War I wasn't caused by a single thing. There was no single event that outbreak of World War I. The many causes are as follows:
-Germany's new foreign expansionist policy
-mutual defence alliances, such as the Triple Alliance (1882) and the Triple Entente (1907)
-Imperial growth
-Militarism by countries such as the United Kingdom and Germany
The fight progressed on two fronts.
-Eastern front: Russians versus Germans and Austro-Hungarians.
-Western front: Germany versus the United Kingdom, France, and, from 1917, the USA.
