  • Here are the three primary steps involved in the process of nitrogen fixation:
    • Nitrogenase enzyme synthesis: Nitrogenase is an enzyme that is responsible for converting nitrogen gas (N2) into ammonia (NH3). This enzyme is produced by certain types of bacteria and archaea that are capable of fixing nitrogen.
    • Reduction of nitrogen: Once the nitrogenase enzyme is synthesized, the nitrogen-fixing bacteria create an environment that is low in oxygen. This is because nitrogenase is very sensitive to oxygen and can be destroyed by it. The enzyme then reduces nitrogen gas (N2) to ammonia (NH3) by adding hydrogen ions (H+) to the nitrogen molecule.
    • Conversion of ammonia into other forms of nitrogen: Once ammonia is produced, it can be converted into other forms of nitrogen such as nitrite (NO2-) and nitrate (NO3-). These forms of nitrogen can be taken up by plants and used to synthesize nitrogenous compounds like proteins and nucleic acids.
