Caste division is unique to India.
Unlike gender, economic and religious divisions that exist everywhere, India's caste division is unique. All societies have different types of social inequalities and some form of labour division. In most societies, occupations are traditional and passed on from one generation to the next. A caste system is an extreme form of this situation. The factor that makes it different from other societies is that rituals sanction the hereditary occupational division in this system. Members of the same caste group are supposed to form a social community that practice the same or similar occupation, are married within the caste group and do not eat with members from other caste groups. Hence this caste division is distinctive and unique.
