Detailed Solution

White Blood Cells (WBCs) are important cells of the immune system that help protect the body from infections and foreign substances. They travel through the blood, identify harmful invaders, and destroy them. Because of this, they are often called the soldiers of the body.

There are three main types of white blood cells:

  1. Granulocytes – These act like phagocytes, which means they can engulf and destroy foreign cells like bacteria, viruses, and other parasites.
  2. Monocytes – Often called the garbage trucks of the immune system, monocytes make up about 5% to 12% of white blood cells. They move into tissues to clean up dead cells and debris.
  3. Lymphocytes – These cells play a key role in immunity. T cells, a type of lymphocyte, directly attack and kill foreign invaders.
