Detailed Solution

Panchayat, which is an administrative unit working at the local level, is an example of decentralisation. Decentralisation means that the powers are divided among the Central and State governments and further distributed to the local governments such as the Panachayati Raj and Municipalities. The local government works towards strengthening the grassroots of democracy. Panchayats work in the rural areas and Municipalities work in the urban area. It was introduced in the Indian Constitution through the 73rd and the 74th amendments made in 1992. It is the third tier of governance in India. A country as large as India needs a local government to efficiently implement the ideas of democracy and to reach issues at the bottom level.
