Which of these is biodegradable waste?

Waste is broadly classified into two categories: biodegradable and non-biodegradable.

The waste generated from kitchens, gardens, etc. comes under biodegradable waste as this can be degraded into simple inorganic compounds by the action of microorganisms.

Metal, glass, plastics, used batteries, etc. come under non-biodegradable wastes as they cannot be degraded into simple compounds by microorganisms.

Fallen leaves and twigs in our garden are biodegradable wastes as they are decomposed naturally by microorganisms. They can also be converted into useful manure by composting.
