Systolic blood pressure is the maximal pressure that the heart exerts when beating. Diastolic blood pressure is the amount of pressure in the arteries during a heartbeat.  The pulse pressure is calculated as the difference between the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. It stands for the force that the beating heart exerts when it contracts.

Normal resting blood pressure is about 120/80 mmHg, which results in a pulse pressure of about 40 mmHg. A pulse pressure of more than 40 mm Hg is typically considered unhealthy.
