Detailed Solution

Sinhala was recognised as the national language, Preferential policies were adopted to favour the Sinhala community, and the state started protecting and fostering Buddhism; measures were adopted by the Sri Lankan government to establish Sinhala supremacy.
When Sri Lanka obtained independence in 1958, the leaders of the majority Sinhala population tended to maintain control over the government. In 1956, an act recognised Sinhala as an official language while disregarding Tamil. The government also adopted regulations that gave preference to Sinhala applicants over others for posts in governmental bodies and universities. The state shall protect and promote Buddhism according to the new constitution.
