Detailed Solution

Sinhala social groups form the majority in Sri Lanka.
The Sinhalese are mostly Buddhist. They are the politically dominant community in Sri Lanka and give the Sri Lankan democracy a majoritarian character. Because of their political dominance, they established Sinhala supremacy. The government passed an act recognizing Sinhala as the official government and also made provisions to protect and foster Buddhism. There is also preferential treatment towards Sinhala people in terms of employment and education opportunities. This preferential policy of the Sri Lankan government has led to discontent among the Tamil people and has led to the rise of a separate Tamil state.
