Detailed Solution

The Chennai Port is the oldest artificial port in India. The Madras port was inaugurated in 1881 though maritime trade began around 1639. Before independence, the port was for travel purposes, but post-independence, it developed into a container port and is the second-largest container port in India. The port came to be called the Chennai port after Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996. The port has a strategic location for import and export to South India and is known as the Gateway of South India. The port provides connectivity to around 50 ports in different parts of the world.
