Detailed Solution

Sinhalese and Tamils are the major social groups in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has a diverse population. There are two major social groups i.e
  • Sinhalese are Sinhala speakers and make up about 74% of the population. Most of the Sinhala-speaking people are Buddhist. They form the majority group in Sri Lanka and are politically dominant.
  • Tamils, who are Tamil speakers, make up about 18% of the population. The Tamils are further divided into two subgroups, i.e. Sri Lankan Tamils, natives of Sri Lanka, and Indian Tamils, whose ancestors came from India as plantation workers during the colonial period. Most of the Tamils are Hindu or Muslim.
