Detailed Solution

Bombay is associated with the formation of the Khilafat Committee in 1919.
After the Rowlatt Satyagraha, Mahatma Gandhi saw the need to start a more significant movement in India by fostering better relations between Muslims and Hindus. He believed that bringing up the Khilafat issue was one method to achieve this. So in March 1919, a Khilafat Committee was established in Bombay to protect the Khalifas' temporal authority. Young Muslim leaders like the Ali brothers, Muhammad and Shaukat, started discussing the potential for a coordinated mass movement on the problem with Gandhi. Gandhiji viewed this as a chance to include Muslims in a single national cause. Hence he persuaded other leaders to launch a Non-cooperation movement in favour of Khilafat at the Congress session in Calcutta in September 1920.
