Poets and painters praised Greece as the 'cradle of European civilisation,' rallying support for the country's fight against Muslim rulership. Lord Byron, an English poet, raised finances and later fought in the war, where he died of illness in 1824. Finally, in 1832, the Treaty of Constantinople recognised Greece as a sovereign nation.
