Detailed Solution

A weak acid is an acid that only partially breaks into ions in water. That means it doesn’t fully release all its H⁺ (hydrogen) ions.

Example of a weak acid: Acetic acid (CH₃COOH)

Why it’s weak:

  • When dissolved in water, only some molecules split into ions
  • The rest stay as they are
  • So the reaction is partial and reversible (⇌)

Simple comparison:

  • Strong acid (like HCl): breaks completely → more H⁺ → stronger effect
  • Weak acid (like CH₃COOH): breaks partially → fewer H⁺ → milder effect

Easy way to remember:

If it’s an organic acid (like vinegar/acetic acid) or not in the common strong acid list, it’s usually weak.
