  • Animals are classified into two types based on how they give birth to their offspring: oviparous, viviparous and ovoviviparous.
    • Oviparous - These animals lay eggs. Although internal fertilisation is observed, embryo development occurs externally. Birds, frogs, and all fish are examples.
    • Viviparous - Viviparous animals are those that give birth to offspring. Both fertilisation and embryo development takes place inside the female body. Examples include dogs, cats, and humans.
    • Ovoviviparous - These are modified viviparous animals where fertilisation occurs inside the female body but the embryo development occurs in the egg-like structure present in the female's body and after complete fetal development offspring is delivered through parturition. Examples include echidna and platypus (egg-laying mammals), basking sharks, guppies (freshwater fishes) etc.
