Inbreeding decreases the productivity of inbred population. This is termed inbreeding depression. It can be overcome by outcrossing.

Continuous inbreeding can lead to reduced fertility, decreased reproductive success and reduced productivity in the population.

(2) Inbreeding increases homozygosity. When closely related individuals mate, there is a higher chance of offspring inheriting identical alleles, resulting in increased homozygosity.

(3) When closely related individuals mate, there is a higher chance of inheriting two copies of the same harmful recessive alleles. This can lead to the expression of genetic disorders which can be eliminated through selection. This is an advantage of inbreeding.

(4) If inbreeding is practiced with careful selection at each generation (selective inbreeding), it is possible to eliminate less desirable genes and accumulate superior genes in a population.
