The Western Ghats is not an area of low rainfall. Before extending to the rest of the country, the southwest monsoon wind from the Arabian Sea first reaches the west coast of India. In the western and southern regions of India, there is a chain of mountains known as the Western Ghats. Due to the monsoon breeze from the Arabian Sea, they have heavy rainfall ranging from 250 cm to 400 cm. Rainfall in some areas of northern India is extremely low—less than 60 cm. Western Rajasthan is one of those areas in India that gets very little rain because, by the time the monsoon breeze from the Bay of Bengal reaches this area, it has dried out and lost all of its moisture. The Western Ghats are first affected by the southwest monsoon wind. Since the Western Ghats include the Deccan Plateau's interior, these mountains block the monsoon breeze, making it difficult for this area to get rain.
