The river is peninsular, drained by the seasonal monsoons. It has a length of about 1500 km. It arises from the Western Ghats at Nasik in Maharashtra. The Godavari basin covers parts of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha. Since it is the largest river in peninsular India, Godavari is often called Dakshin Ganga due to its size and drainage area.
