Over-irrigation is the leading cause of Land Degradation in Punjab.
Besides Punjab, the state of Haryana and the western part of  Uttar Pradesh are prone to over-irrigation and are responsible for land degradation. Due to water logging, there is an increase in salinity and alkalinity in the soil. In Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Jharkhand, deforestation is the reason for land degradation, whereas, in states like Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra, overgrazing is one of the main reasons for land degradation.
