Detailed Solution

Ploughing up and down the slopes is not a helpful practice for soil conservation.
In contrast, the inappropriate way to plough, i.e. up and down the hill, creates channels for the swift flow of water that causes soil erosion. Water can move more slowly down slopes when ploughed along contour lines. This process is known as contour ploughing. On slopes, terraces can be created by cutting off steps. Erosion is limited by terrace farming. Terrace farming is extensively developed in the western and central Himalayas. Thus, instead of aiding soil conservation, ploughing up and down the slopes aids its erosion.
