The mineral in Monazite sand is Thorium. Monazite is a reddish-brown phosphate mineral that contains rare-earth metals. It is considered a group of minerals due to its variability in composition. In India, the monazite sands of Kerala are rich in Thorium. Recently it has been suggested that Thorium can be used in place of Uranium as a nuclear fuel in nuclear reactors. Due to this region, several Thorium reactors have been built in India. Thorium is widely used for generating nuclear and atomic power.
