Visakhapatnam is the deepest land-locked and well-protected port along the east coast. The Visakhapatnam port is one of India's 13 major ports, located between the ports of Chennai and Kolkata. Even though the British perceived the necessity to build a port on the east coast to access the Central Provinces in the nineteenth century, Col. H. Cartwright Reid's suggestion to build a port at Visakhapatnam was accepted by the Government only after the First World War of the British Admiralty. Iron ore, manganese ore, steel products, general cargo, coal, and crude oil are the primary commodities handled by this port.
