Detailed Solution

Rabindranath Tagore renounced his knighthood to protest against the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The Jallianwala Bagh tragedy, in which British colonial forces killed hundreds of Indians who were peacefully demonstrating, prompted a response from all the leading figures of India. Tagore was particularly critical of how General Dyer was commended for his actions in the British press. In a letter to Chelmsford, Tagore stated that "the time has come" when "badges of honour make our shame glaring in the incongruous context of humiliation, and I for my part wish to stand, shorn of all special distinctions, by the side of those of my countrymen who, for their so-called insignificance, are liable to suffer a degradation not fit for human beings."
