The Narmada river flows in a rift valley. A geologic rift between several peaks or mountain ranges can result in the formation of rift valleys, which are linear lowlands. When extensional tectonics pulls the lithosphere apart, rifts are created. Future erosion causes could make the linear depression worse. The fifth-longest river in India, the largest west-flowing river, and the largest river in Madhya Pradesh are the Narmada River, also known as the Reva and earlier as Narbada or Nerbudda. Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, two Indian states, are traversed by this river.
