Detailed Solution

The Ganga river is declared National waterway Number 1.
India carries out large volumes of foreign trade through waterways. Waterways are the cheapest means of transport, as they are variably suitable for carrying heavy/ bulky loads and fuel-efficient. The Ganga- Bhagirathi- Hooghly river system extending from Haldi to Allahabad for a distance of 1620 kilometres was declared National Waterway No. 1 via the National waterway Act 1982. It was operational after the formation of IWAI. Some other national waterways are the Brahmaputra river, specified stretches of the Brahmani river, Godavari river, and Krishna river. There are some other inland waterways in which substantial transformation takes place.
