The Gaddi is a shepherd tribe that lives in the western Himalayas. They rear goats and sheep. They move between the lower hills of the Shivalik ranges to the villages of Lahaul and Spiti in search of pastures for their animals. When the high mountains are covered with snow, they spend their winters in the lower hills of the Shivalik range. The dry shrub forests here provide pastures for their flocks. By April, they move north and spend the summer in Lahaul and Spiti. When the snow melts and the high pass clears, many of them move to the high mountain grasslands.
