Detailed Solution

The transformation of a complex and advanced larva into a simple and primitive adult is termed retrogressive metamorphosis. The ascidian tadpole larva of Ascidia (Urochordata) undergoes retrogressive metamorphosis. The larva has a notochord, a dorsal nerve chord and a tail. During metamorphosis, the notochord and the tail are lost and the dorsal nerve cord is reduced to a solid ganglion. The adult lacks a notochord and a tail.
