The stupa was an earthen burial mound. India's first stupa was constructed about 1,500 years ago. Buddhists erected stupas, which are decorative buildings that house artefacts from the life of the Buddha. They are used as meditation spaces. Buddha-related events are shown in the decorations on the surrounding fences and doorways of stupas. Famous stupas include the Dhamek Stupa in Sarnath and the Great Stupa at Sanchi.
