Reserving seats in Parliament was not a demand of the Sri Lankan Tamils. The Tamil-speaking minority in Sri Lanka is one of the main social groups. Sri Lankan Tamils are the name given to Tamils native to Sri Lanka. As a result of their majority, the leaders of the Sinhala Community, another significant socioeconomic group, established their control in the government following Sri Lanka's independence in 1948. However, this led to a divergence between Sri Lanka's two main social groupings. The Tamils of Sri Lanka started organisations and campaigns in reaction. They requested that Tamil be acknowledged as an official language. Additionally, they pushed for equality in employment and education opportunities and regional sovereignty. However, they did not demand a reservation of seats in Parliament.
