The universal adult franchise is defined as the right to vote, which is given to all adult citizens above a certain age without discrimination of caste, class, colour, or religion. The Civil Code of 1804, usually called the Napoleonic Code, did away with all privileges based on birth, established equality before the court, and preserved property rights. However, the Napoleonic Code went back to limited adult suffrage and marked a downfall of women to the status of minor, subject to the authority of fathers and husbands.
