Vladimir Lenin, the Bolshevik leader, returned to Russia from exile in April 1917. Since 1914, he and the Bolsheviks have opposed the war. He believed it was now time for the Soviets to take control. He demanded that the conflict be ended, the land is given to the peasants, and banks are nationalised. Lenin's 'April Theses' were these three demands. He also proposed renaming the Bolshevik Party the Communist Party to reflect its new radical goals. Lenin wanted the Bolsheviks to support the provisional government too. However, no demand was made whatsoever to support a common election system.
