In April 1917, the Bolshevik leader Vladimir Lenin returned to Russia from exile. He and the Bolsheviks have opposed the war since 1914. He thought the time had come for the Soviets to take over. He urged that the Russian involvement in war should end, the peasants should receive land, and that the banks be nationalized. These three demands made up Lenin's "April Theses." He also suggested calling the Bolshevik Party the Communist Party to reflect its increasingly extreme objectives. Lenin wished for the Bolsheviks to join them in backing the interim administration. However, there was no demand made to back a uniform election system.
