Restoration of Parliament movement was started by SPA.
The first wave of democracy in Nepal came to an end when the country's then-king, King Birendra, agreed to change the country's political system from absolute monarchy to democracy. In 2001, however, he was discovered dead in strange circumstances. King Gyanendra, his successor, refused to accept the modification. To express their dissatisfaction, the major political party SPA planned a four-day strike in Kathmandu. With the help of Maoist insurgents and other organisations, this quickly grew into an indefinite strike. In April 2006, the people submitted a plea to the king.
