James Mill opposed the Orientalists.
Orientalists believed in the local vernacular, and one of the officials who criticised the Orientalists was James Mill. However, many British officials criticised the Orientalist approach to education in the early nineteenth century. He said that the British effort should not focus on teaching the natives what they desired or appreciated to appease them and "win a place in their heart." Instead, the goal of education should be to provide practical and valuable knowledge.
