The National Sample Survey Organisation, popularly known as the NSSO, is responsible for carrying out surveys to determine the consumption, income, and spending patterns of households that make up the population of India. The poverty line is updated periodically, once every five years. The poverty line is estimated separately for the rural and urban areas as the data collected for both is notably different. The NSSO comes under the ministry of statistics of the government of India and is the largest sample survey organisation in India.
