Which oxidant is used for purification of drinking water?

Water often contains various pollutants that can be harmful to aquatic life and humans. Contaminated water is a major cause of diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea, dysentery, food poisoning, and skin infections like trachoma, among others. Drinking unsafe water directly increases the risk of these illnesses, which makes purified and safe water essential for good health.

To remove impurities and pathogens, oxidizing agents are commonly used:

• Ozone (O₃): One of the most powerful oxidants used in water purification. It helps eliminate unwanted taste and odour. Ozone also oxidizes metals such as magnesium, sulphur, and iron, converting them into soluble or removable particles.
• Chlorine: Widely used as a disinfectant, chlorine kills bacteria and viruses by breaking the chemical bonds in their molecules. It can be added in the form of bleaching powder or bubbled directly as chlorine gas into water for effective purification.
