Detailed Solution

Oxides are classified into three types based on their chemical nature:

  1. Acidic Oxides – These oxides react with water to form an acid.
  2. Basic Oxides – These oxides react with water to form a base.
  3. Neutral Oxides – These oxides do not show acidic or basic properties when reacting with water.

Nitrogen Oxides: There are five main nitrogen oxides:

  • Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂)
  • Nitric oxide (NO)
  • Nitrous oxide (N₂O)
  • Nitrogen trioxide (NO₃)
  • Nitrogen pentoxide (N₂O₅)

Among these, the neutral oxides are Nitric oxide (NO) and Nitrous oxide (N₂O).

  • Nitrous oxide (N₂O) is slightly soluble in water, so it is considered a neutral oxide.
  • Nitric oxide (NO) is very soluble in water but also behaves as a neutral oxide.
