The Poona Pact gave the depressed classes reserved seats in the provincial and central legislative councils. The grievances of the Dalits were highly different from the rest of the society. They were led by renowned Dalit campaigner and barrister Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar. At the Second Round Table Conference, his opinions did not align with Gandhi's. Ambedkar suggested creating separate voting districts for those from lower castes. Gandhi disagreed, arguing that establishing separate electorates for Dalits would hinder their assimilation into society. Gandhi started a death fast in response to Ambedkar's demand. Ambedkar finally accepted Gandhi's perspective, and the issue was settled with the 1932 Poona Pact. The depressed classes were given reserved seats in the provincial and central legislative councils, but the general electorate was required to elect them.
