Detailed Solution

Vishnugopa was captured and later freed by Samudragupta.
King Vishnugopa of the Pallava dynasty was defeated and then freed by Samudra Gupta, emperor of Magadha, around the mid-4th century CE during Samudragupta's southern conquests.
Samudragupta marched along the southeast coast of India and advanced as far as the Pallava kingdom. The Allahabad Pillar Inscription, composed by his courtier Harishena, says that instead of annexing Visnugopa's territory to his growing empire, he freed and reinstated Venugopal as the ruler of Kanchi.
