The hypothalamus acts as the body’s thermostat, helping to regulate and maintain a stable internal temperature close to a set point (usually around 37°C), ensuring optimal conditions for metabolic processes.

The hypothalamus contains thermoreceptors that sense the temperature of the blood flowing through it, as well as signals from thermoreceptors in the skin. When body temperature rises, the hypothalamus triggers mechanisms like sweating and vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) to cool the body. When body temperature drops, the hypothalamus promotes shivering (that generate heat) and vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels) to reduce heat loss.
