The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) was formed in 1984 under the leadership of Kanshi Ram.
Its purpose was to serve the lower strata of the society- Adivasis, OBCs, Dalits and minorities. It was formed to save their rights from the elite upper-class people and build inspiration from the teachings of independent leaders like Mahatma Phule, Periyar Ramaswamy Naicker, and Babasaheb Ambedkar. Gradually Bahujan Samaj Party became a national party and was elected many times in the Uttar Pradesh elections.
