The period after 1990 saw the rise of political parties in many states in India.
After independence, the same party ruled the centre and most states. Due to this, the centre exercised more power and control over the state administration. This undermined the spirit of federalism. After the 1990s, there was an increase in regional political parties. At the same time, coalition governments also began to form at the centre. Since no single national party could get a clear-cut majority, the parties formed coalitions with other national and regional parties to form coalition governments. This was the beginning of the period of coalition governments. The regional parties played an essential role in creating coalition governments.
