Detailed Solution

Lord Dalhousie implemented the Doctrine of Lapse.
From 1848 to 1856, Lord Dalhousie served as the Governor-General of India. He devised a policy for the annexation of territories to colonial rule. The policy formulated by him is known as the  Doctrine of Lapse. According to this policy, if any ruler of the state died without a legal heir, his kingdom would lapse. That kingdom would become part of colonial territory. In this policy, the adopted son was not declared as heir. This policy was used to annex the kingdoms of Satara, Sambalpur, Udaipur, Nagpur, and  Jhansi. This policy of Dalhousie enraged the Indian rulers. This became a strong point of  opposition by the Indian rulers and they revolted against the company's rule in 1857.
