Being the principal party of the Independence movement, the Indian National Congress won the elections very easily in the early years after Indian Independence. People elected them into power because they believed that this was the only party which could ensure the development of India as it freed them from the British. In the first few elections, the party won at the national level as well as in all the states. This allowed for cordial relations between the Centre and the states as both the governments were of the same party. It allowed for better coordination among the governments.
