Detailed Solution

The port of Surat connected India with Gulf countries and the Red sea ports.
The pre-colonial ports existed on the western and eastern coasts of India. The port of Surat was the prominent port that dominated the trade with the gulf country and the red sea ports. The local merchant controlled it and connected the port cities with the villages. The prime product of export through this port was silk and cotton textiles. These textiles were of acceptable quality and dominated the international market. However, the port of Surat was affected in the eighteenth century when the British established their colony over India. They set up new ports like Mumbai and  Calcutta, which reduced the importance of old ports.
