The western and central Himalayas region of India has well-developed terrace farming.
Terrace farming is done on the slopes of mountains or hills divided into terraces or steps. Water can move more slowly down slopes when ploughed following contour lines. This process is known as contour plowing. On hills, terraces can be created by cutting off steps. Erosion is limited by terrace gardening. Terrace farming is well-developed in the western and central Himalayas. Strips can be used to split up large areas. Between the crops, strips of grass are allowed to grow.
