The large inflow of indentured labour from China and India to the Western nations is a dark side of the 19th century's rapidly growing and advanced world. Thousands of Indian and Chinese labourers were hired to work in plantations, mines, and construction projects in the rapidly developing world. In India, most of the indentured workers were hired on a 5-year contract from the poor regions of present-day Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, central India and dry districts of Tamil Nadu.
